Mastering Film UI  - Learn Squeared Course

cube_div_12x12

The goal of the lesson plan for my course "Mastering Film UI" on the Learn Squared platform was to cover my entire production workflow and techniques on how to create professional quality interfaces for feature films.

What started as a modest design exercise, ended up being almost 8 hours of recorded footage where I guide students through my design pipeline and share my way of thinking.

Ultimately, after years of learning and growing from other artists, I wanted to share insights into my own creative process and hopefully help someone with new techniques to improve their own journey in an art and design career.

Serving as a benchmark for the lesson plan, the final presentation of the course objectives were edited into a short sequence titled "Tracer".

The lesson plan spans my process from early ideation through to production and focuses on the concept of storytelling as a major building block, where I show how I plan my ideas, sketch and iterate on designs, before building up assets for animation and presentation.

With the goal of the lesson plan being a complete look into my thought process, design phase and production, I needed to create a realistic scenario for the project to live in. As with all things I enjoy, this required a certain amount of story and narrative to inform the designs and functionality of what was going to be created.

I love a good noir detective story, so my first insitincts were to create a scene where a detective is following a lead and investigating a case. From his vehicle, perhaps with the help of a drone or other external equipment, he scans a nearby building and discovers the suspect inside that he is looking for.

This setup gave me the necessary story beats that I needed to create the components of both the interfaces and hero hologram as well as informing the technology that houses and drives all the interactive elements.

The most important element in the story takes place within the hero holograph, which meant the projector unit needed to be thoughtfully considered and designed. After deciding on some stylistic influences I built the main projector rig to work as a standalone unit, which has been mounted into a fixture within the vehicle.

Influenced by the interior of classic Wurlitzer jukeboxes, the core filament spins to fire up the main outer coil which powers the projection. To sell the moving parts within a bit more, internal areas of the base are also exposed, perhaps to allow for repair or lubrication etc.

A large part of the lesson is planning, sketching, designing and animating the final hologram. From the start I show how I work out my ideas in a loose and fast process, normally in a small format in my sketchbook. From there we move into photoshop to establish the main beats, before we start the proper design phase.

Also covered extensively in the lesson are the secondary and tertiary elements that make up the final scene. These are seemingly minor but greatly help establish the scene and ground the other more fantastic elements, increasing the believability and functionality of all the moving pieces.
